How it works

How to read the calendar

Choose a date or a month and a plant type. The calendar shows the meteorological season, the planting windows that are currently open for that type and the next ones coming. Each window states the conditions to check before you plant, for example whether the soil is workable and whether frost-tender plants are safe outdoors.

Meteorological seasons are spring from March to May, summer from June to August, fall from September to November and winter from December to February. They are a calendar convention, and they do not tell you that the ground is ready.

Hardiness zones help you judge whether a plant is expected to survive winter here. Canadian and USDA zones are different systems and must not be converted into one another, and a zone is a regional guide rather than a measure of the conditions beside your wall. The hardiness guide explains both systems.
