Garden planning guide

A Montréal care calendar guided by conditions

Treat a seasonal calendar as a prompt to inspect the garden, not a set of compulsory dates.

In spring, first assess access and the condition of the ground. Avoid starting a project merely because a date has arrived. Inspect plants before deciding what to remove or prune, and identify unfamiliar shrubs. Espace pour la vie’s garden-cleanup advice includes reviewing dense, compacted leaf cover. Keep the clean-up decision specific to the bed rather than treating every leaf or standing stem as waste. Review watering arrangements before installing new plants.

Pruning is species-sensitive. Lilacs develop the following year’s flower buds after bloom, so Minnesota Extension recommends pruning them immediately after flowering. This is not a rule for every shrub or tree. Espace pour la vie’s Quebec guidance for deciduous trees gives a different timing context from the dormant-season advice often found in extension references. Confirm the species, health and objective with a qualified person; disease risks, structural problems and proximity to power lines require particular care.

In summer, inspect moisture, weeds and plant development and update the saved plan. In fall, assess establishment and moisture before the ground freezes, decide which healthy material can remain and check the collection schedule for your address. Winter is useful for recording snow-storage patterns and planning access; do not attempt dangerous overhead pruning. Municipal requirements and collection rules apply locally, with exceptions and changes possible. This calendar therefore links to current authorities instead of declaring one watering, collection or tree rule for the whole island. Keep tasks that are relevant to your plants, and add professional checks where an identification or diagnosis remains unresolved.
