Spacing and tree siting draw the mature garden

A spacing estimate is useful only when its layout is stated.

For example, a ten-metre row with one-metre spacing and plants at both ends has eleven positions. The same row with a half-metre setback at each end has ten positions. Neither result tells you whether that distance suits a particular shrub. Confirm the proposed spacing with the exact species or cultivar and desired form. Our practical suggestion is to place temporary stakes before placing an order, then inspect doors, sight lines, seating and the route used by a mower or delivery team.

Trees need a separate assessment. Hydro-Québec emphasizes mature height, width and ground space when selecting a location near electrical infrastructure. Use its species-specific tree or shrub selection tool for safe planting distance instead of applying one clearance to all trees. Look overhead, identify buildings and other structures, and arrange an underground utility locate before digging. A young tree’s small crown is not evidence that its mature canopy will fit.

Check the property boundary, public right-of-way, existing roots and local tree requirements with the relevant municipality. Tree removal, replacement, protection during work and permitted planting locations may involve separate rules. Our planning suggestion is to annotate the drawing with questions rather than guessing an answer from a neighbouring street. Keep the final species name, mature dimensions, location, utility checks and any municipal confirmation in the saved plan. If the proposed tree cannot fit, revise the selection or location before planting; repeated cutting is not a substitute for an appropriate site.

Planning note. Sources checked October 9, 2026. Planning suggestions, horticultural facts and municipal rules are kept separate: confirm anything that depends on your plant, site or address.
