When should you trim a cedar hedge in Montreal?

The first step is identifying the hedge. A cedar hedge and a flowering shrub hedge do not automatically need the same timing or treatment. If you are unsure, send close-up foliage photos along with an overall view before requesting a particular cutting date.
For cedar, Espace pour la vie recommends late June, after most annual growth has occurred. Its hedge-pruning guidance allows suitable cedar work through early September, avoiding very hot or dry periods, and warns against cutting into old wood. This is horticultural guidance, not a CaféTico booking calendar.
Maintenance trimming or a major size reduction?
Tell the contractor whether you want a tidier existing shape or a substantially shorter and narrower hedge. Those are different requests. A photo showing only the outer surface may not reveal what is inside the hedge or what a major reduction would expose.
Do not assume a hedge can be reduced to any chosen size while keeping the same appearance. Ask for the proposed limits to be explained before work begins.
Prepare four useful details
- Length: the approximate distance along each hedge section.
- Height: an estimate of its current height and the result you want.
- Access: whether both sides are reachable and whether there are gates or steps.
- Condition: photographs of the whole hedge and any unusually bare or damaged areas.
Rough measurements are enough to start the conversation. Do not climb or reach into an unsafe position to obtain photos. If the height or access cannot be assessed remotely, discuss whether an on-site assessment is needed.
Ask what the estimate includes
Clarify whether tops, sides and adjacent shrubs are part of the work. Ask what happens to the cut material and whether handling or transport is included. Mention boundaries or neighbouring access that need agreement before a visit.
Planning in autumn
An October request should not automatically become a heavy cedar trim. Describe the concern and ask what can appropriately be assessed now and what should be planned for another period. This prevents a seasonal cleanup request from silently turning into a different pruning job.
