CaféTico’s coffee side began with a request: producers in Guanacaste, Costa Rica asked us to represent their coffee in Canada. This page tells how that grew into a company, what we are here to do, and what we are still working toward.
The story
2024
The request
In 2024, producers in the Guanacaste region of Costa Rica reached out and asked us to represent their coffee in Canada.
We saw a gap worth closing. Cafés and roasters in Canada often have no direct line to the farms that grow their coffee. Our founder has personal connections with coffee producers in Costa Rica, and the request gave those connections a purpose.
We said yes, and began building the company that could keep that promise.
2025
Samples and our visit
Our visit to Costa Rica included cupping, the way coffee people taste side by side. Costa Rican roasted whole-bean samples were provided to us in March 2025.
Cupping puts ground coffee in small bowls, adds hot water and gives everyone a spoon. It lets you compare coffees fairly and notice what each one offers. Our guide to tasting notes and cupping shows how.
The samples gave us something to taste, discuss and compare at home, and a first concrete step toward bringing Costa Rican coffee to Canadian businesses.

A company to carry it
On April 8, 2025, Café Tico Trading Company Inc. (Café Tico Compagnie de Commerce Inc.) was incorporated under the Canada Business Corporations Act, with its base in Montréal.
The relationship with producers began in 2024. The company came a little later, and it grew through two complementary activities: landscaping in Montréal, our first operating activity, and a developing coffee venture built around relationships with producers in Costa Rica.
Today
Monte Romo, our first coffee offering
Monte Romo Dark Roast is our first coffee offering from Guanacaste, Costa Rica.
It is grown in Monte Romo, in the hills of Guanacaste, and roasted dark. We offer it in 100 g, 250 g and 500 g bags, and we are taking enquiries from cafés, restaurants, grocers, markets, offices and businesses looking for gifts. Availability and terms are discussed directly, so the first step is simply to request a sample.

What we are working toward
More Canadians tasting the coffee, through businesses that care where it comes from.
We would like to bring Monte Romo to farmers’ markets and local grocery shelves, and, with the producers, to pursue Fair Trade certification. These are goals. We will say so when they are achieved.

Our mission
CaféTico’s purpose is to build lasting connections between coffee producers and the businesses that serve their coffee.
Starting with relationships in Costa Rica and a base in Montréal, we aim to create opportunities for producers through fair dealing, thoughtful representation and dependable partnerships.
Between a coffee farm and a café counter there are many hands and many steps. We believe a personal relationship with the producers, and a representative who speaks for their coffee in Canada, makes for fairer dealing and a coffee that is better known. We focus on businesses (cafés, restaurants, grocers, markets and offices) because that is where coffee reaches most people, and because they need a hands-on partner more than another vendor.
Our business model brings commercial opportunity and social purpose together. We want to develop a coffee business that values the people behind the product, while exploring practical ways to support children, families and producer communities. These ambitions guide what we are building; specific programs will be explained as they are established.
