When should spring yard cleanup start in Montreal?

By CaféTico LandscapingPublished

The first warm day is a reason to look at the yard, not necessarily a reason to begin every task. Separate what you can observe from what should be assessed before people and equipment enter the lawn or beds.

Espace pour la vie’s spring-cleanup guidance says to start bed cleanup when the soil is sufficiently dry and avoid walking on waterlogged ground. Site conditions should guide the timing rather than a fixed Montréal-wide start date.

Make a short condition list

From an accessible path, note the areas you want assessed: accumulated leaves, material around beds, lawn sections and access routes. Photograph the overall property and the area that concerns you most. You do not need to diagnose every plant before making a request.

If parts of the yard remain saturated, describe that in your message. Ask whether the proposed work should wait or be divided into separate visits.

Decide what belongs in the cleanup

Write down the surfaces and planting areas you want included. Identify beds you want preserved and anything you are unsure about. “Clean the entire yard” can hide different expectations about plants, leaves, edging and material removal.

A useful scope names the tasks rather than assuming cleanup includes repair, seeding, planting or every other landscaping service. If you want additional work, request it explicitly and have it priced separately or clearly included.

Prepare access and material handling

Explain gates, steps, locks and where collected material could be gathered. Ask the estimate to specify what will remain on-site and what, if anything, will be removed. If municipal collection is part of your plan, check the official collection schedule for your location.

Turn your notes into a clear request

Fill-in template

“I would like spring cleanup of ____. These areas should stay untouched: ____. The yard is currently dry / partly wet / not yet assessed. Access is through ____. Please explain the included tasks, material handling and proposed timing.”

Keep the requested start date separate from the quote turnaround. Receiving an estimate does not mean a visit has been scheduled.
